'INTERNET IS ABOUT TO CHANGE FOREVER'
The internet is about to expand on a whole new level. Rod Beckstrom, president and CEO of Internet Corporation for assigned names and numbers, (ICANN) is looking to expand the number domain names. Over 1500 possible internet addresses were submitted for consideration. According to the associate, Amazon.com wants “.joy, “ Google wants “.love” and L’Oreal wants “.beauty.” – go figures.
Tons of other names like “.kids, & “.tires” were also submitted but the biggest bids were for “.app” “.adults”, “.online” and tons of others. While the bids must go through review for months, possible years, over 1,000 suffixes can be added each year. This could be very useful, an alternative to .net and .com’s could mean new business, innovation and growth of the world wide web. Web Designers are really going to make a great living. What are negatives? Well, some website may attempt to disguise your website, so now when new sites are release you may be force to purchase all the suffixes that title your name. Also names like .org may have to compete with .art, .inc, .bmw, .associates. This will leave a enormous value for confusion, because most already associate websites with .com with the other thousands possibility, it may get a little crazy.
Top bidders had to pay $185, 000 just to submit a proposal. If approved each suffix would cost at least $25,000 a year to maintain. Of course larger institutions like Yahoo and Microsoft will keep things like .yahoo and .microsoft for in house employee use. Imagine if Amazon obtain “.books”. The weirdest thing about the story was that Facebook did not bid for any! I guest Facebook.fb wouldn’t sound so cool. Wonder if Snooki put in a bid for .jerseyshore. Kidding!
